Let’s Tell Jokes with KIBO!

“We love telling jokes in our Library. To enrich our joke telling skills with the use of KIBO, two students select a joke and then work together to create lines of code so that one KIBO with a puppet on top can begin a joke by asking a question like “What do you call a _____.” The other student creates a line a code so that her KIBO with a puppet on top moves and replies with “I don’t know. What do you call a _____.” The first student creates a line of code to finish the joke and the other student can code her KIBO to move and laugh. This is a great way to learn the skill of having 2 KIBOs interact with each other, planning and executing lines of code that allow the KIBOs to “talk to each other” and having fun telling different types of jokes.
My children demonstrated this. James and Kira are 10 year old twins in 4th grade. They found this activity challenging, but really fun. They had no prior exposure to KIBO, so I had to give them a little lesson before tackling this activity. One thing that we found super helpful was to clap two coding blocks together when using the “clap” block and Ear Sensor. This worked much better than actually clapping with your hands.”
Enjoy! What jokes can you tell with KIBO?
