KIBO Firmware Update

If you are ready to update the firmware on your KIBO, you have come to the right place! When we say “firmware,” we are referring to the program that makes KIBO’s circuit boards work the way we designed them. Look at your KIBO through its transparent bottom. If your KIBO has green circuit boards, then it will need a firmware update in order to use the Sound Record & Playback Module. (KIBOs with blue circuit boards don’t need to be updated because they already have the latest firmware.)

IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to update your KIBO, you will need either a Mac with OSX, or Windows version 7 or later.

This update (2.28) will modify the behavior of your KIBO in the following ways:
* It will enable the Sound Record & Playback Module;
* The light bulb (red, white, or blue) will stay lit longer (2 seconds) when it is activated;
* Right and left turns will be closer to 90°.

To install your firmware update, choose and click on the appropriate link (Mac or Windows) below.

Note: if you are running anti-virus software, you may need to explicitly allow the firmware updater to run, or you may need to temporarily disable your anti-virus software. The procedure for this will depend on which anti-virus software you use.

1. Make sure your computer is on, and your KIBO has 4 working AA batteries installed.

2. Plug your KIBO into your computer using the USB cable provided.

3. Download the update file. The file is called KIBOFirmwareUpdate_v2.28.dmg. Save it somewhere on your computer where you can find it again.

4. Go to where you saved the update and double click on it. It will open up the KIBOFirmwareUpdate file.

5. Double-click the KIBOFirmwareUpdate icon.

You may get a security warning that says “KIBOFirmwareUpdate can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer”. If so, you need to temporarily change your security settings.

To do this, open up your System Preferences (under the Apple logo menu at the top left of your screen) > Security & Privacy. On the General tab, under “Allow apps downloaded from:” click “Anywhere”. (You should return this to its original setting once you are done with the update.)

6. After you have changed your security settings, double-click on the KIBOFirmwareUpdate icon again

7. This will likely open a security warning. Click “Open”.

8. This will open the firmware updater. Click “Update Firmware”.

9. When the updater is finished, you will see a message at the bottom of the window telling you to (a) disconnect the cable, and then (b) remove and re-insert one of the batteries. (It says “remove and replace” but you can really just remove and re-insert one battery.)

You have successfully updated your KIBO — congratulations!

Installing firmware update from a Windows computer

Note: if you are running anti-virus software, you may need to explicitly allow the firmware updater to run, or you may need to temporarily disable your anti-virus software. The procedure for this will depend on which anti-virus software you use.

1. Make sure your computer is on, and your KIBO has 4 working AA batteries installed.

2. Plug your KIBO into your computer using the USB cable provided.

3. Download the update file. The file is called KIBOFirmwareUpdate_v2.28.exe. Save it somewhere on your computer where you can find it again.

4. Go to where you saved the update and double click on it.

You will get a warning saying that the publisher could not be verified. You do not need to worry about this. (We are the publisher!) Click Run.

5. This will launch the installer, which should look like this (below). You can just accept the suggested location in the “Destination folder” box, unless you want to put it somewhere else. Hit the “Install” button.

6. The KIBO Firmware Updater (v2.28) will open. Click the “Update Firmware” button.

7. When it’s finished, unplug the USB cable, and reset your KIBO by removing and re-inserting one of the batteries.

Your KIBO firmware is now up to date. Congratulations!
